As a health care professional interested in the issue of health care for the lesbian and gay community, we invite you to become part of the oldest existing association of lesbian and gay physicians in the country. You do not have to be gay or a lesbian to be part of our group, but at least gay-sensitive.

History:
Bay Area Physicians for Human Rights (BAPHR) was founded in response to the anti-gay campaigns of 1977 and the need to form support groups for lesbian and gay medical students, residents, and other health care providers. Following BAPHR's creation, similar groups emerged across the country.

In June of 1981, a new national organization grew out of BAPHR. Formerly known as the American Association of Physicians for Human Rights, it is now called the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA) . With the advent of the AIDS crisis, BAPHR took a lead in providing educational, preventive, and direct patient services to help combat this growing threat. BAPHR enjoys cordial relations and professional networking with our colleagues in the California Medical Association and the San Francisco Medical Society.

Goals:
BAPHR is dedicated to improving the quality of health care for lesbians and gay men and providing personal and professional support to the local community of health care professionals who work so diligently for the community at large.

BAPHRON Archive:
Below you'll find pdfs of some of the first issues of the BAPHRON, a newsletter that was published early in BAPHR's history. Check out issues chronicling such events as one of the first reports of HIV/ AIDS, the founding of AAPHR (now GLMA), and other interesting bits of LGBT history.
